People are different. A lot of people do not want the duvet cover to have several inches at the bottom or top that doesn't have the duvet in it, while some people do not stress about getting the duvet or comforter to fit the cover exactly. Still, one of the most frequently asked questions by my clients – how to know the right size of a linen duvet cover (or doona cover, as my clients in Australia would say) for the duvet (or comforter). What are the most important things to know before purchasing a new linen duvet cover?
Let's say You have a lovely king or queen size duvet. It looks like the most simple way would be to look for a king or queen size duvet cover. There are some very simple and useful tips which may help You while making your decision about the right duvet cover size for YOUR duvet.
A few words about 'standard' duvet cover sizes
Despite the fact some 'standard' terms are used for bedding sizes across the globe ('single', 'double', 'queen', 'king', 'super king', etc.), the reality is different when it comes to their actual dimensions.
I have checked multiple online sources and online stores selling bed linens in different countries to see what dimensions they refer to as standard size duvets, quilts, doona covers. TIPS:
MEASURE. It takes just a minute. Measure the width and the length of your duvet. Put the figures down so that you do not forget them. I recommend to order a duvet cover that is about 1 inch larger than your duvet. If you love snugger fit, you may want to consider a duvet cover approximately 1 inch smaller than your duvet.
CUSTOM SIZE. Look for shops that offer custom size duvet covers. Let's say your duvet is 88x90 inches, and you are not sure if 88x88 inches cover will fit. The best way is to order a custom size 89x91 inches cover.
PRE-WASHED. If you buy a linen duvet cover, make sure it is made of pre-washed linen fabric. Pre-washed linen fabric is essential if you want your duvet cover to be prevented from shrinking.
CORNER TIES. If you prefer your duvet not to clump at the bottom of the duvet cover, make sure the new duvet cover has corner ties that keep the duvet secured inside the cover.
LINEN. Why linen, not cotton? I prefer linen not only because linen looks much more stylish and creates more naturally relaxed atmosphere in the bedroom. Linen is more durable and dries much faster compared to cotton, so it gives better comfort when sleeping. And it is extremely important in hot weather. After I tried linen bedding myself, I never wanted to get back to cotton. You will not know unless you try.
WIDTH V. LENGTH. Be careful about where is the width and where is the length, it is important to understand where the closure is. I noticed some shops are not very attentive to these details, and confuse width/length figures. Below is the scheme of linen duvet covers crafted by Linenspace.
Happy shopping!
